Dr Rolf Gomes
Founder, Hearts of Australia
Dr Rolf Gomes is an electrical engineer-turned-cardiologist and the Founder of Heart of Australia β a groundbreaking mobile healthcare program bringing specialist medicine to the doorsteps of rural, remote, and First Nations communities.
Inspired by the stark health inequities he witnessed as a junior cardiologist training in the bush, Dr Gomes combined his engineering know-how and medical expertise to design a fully equipped clinic-on-wheels βthe Heart Truck β that would change the way specialist healthcare and testing is accessed by country Australians.
Launched in 2014 with the support of his family, that single truck began servicing five rural communities in central and southern Queensland. Today, the program has grown into a multi-disciplinary healthcare service providing a range of specialties in over 30 communities, as well as delivering preventative and occupational health programs, education programs, and clinical trials.
In 2025, Heart of Australia began expanding services nationally after being named the official provider for the Commonwealth Government to deliver mobile lung cancer screening in rural and remote communities across the country. This will see Dr Gomes and the team roll out five more mobile clinics that will provide comprehensive radiology services across all states and the Northern Territory.
Driven by a belief that access to quality healthcare should not depend on your postcode, Dr Gomes continues to challenge the boundaries of rural medicine through Heart of Australia β one kilometre at a time.
